Hunebed D15 keeps solitary watch over the fields around the village of Loon, just east of Assen. It is one of the most complete hunebedden in Drenthe.
I was lucky to find it on a quiet Sunday morning while a storm loomed overhead, as darkening clouds emphasize the strategic use of red-tinged stones in its construction.
The Rolde twins, D17/18, are beautifully situated in a large grove of trees bordering the current churchyard. Remains of other megaliths have been found under the old church itself, indicating a larger complex.
To the east, the hunebedden of Gasteren, Eext, Tynaarlo and Drouwen show both typical and unique features of the monuments.
